Why Roger Federer’s Wimbledon loss to Novak Djokovic will ‘torment’ Swiss star

ROGER FEDERER will forever remember his Wimbledon final defeat to Novak Djokovic after having two match points.

Wimbledon: Federer does not want to be 'depressed' after loss

That’s the view of tennis pundit Andrew Castle, who saw Roger Federer beaten in one of the greatest finals of all time.

Novak Djokovic prevailed in just under five hours, winning 7-6 1-6 7-6 4-6 13-12.

It was the longest men’s final ever seen at SW19 and the first time a tie-break at 12-12 was needed in the deciding set.

Federer had had two match points in the fifth, up 8-7 and 40-15, to win his ninth Wimbledon title.

But he could not convert and Djokovic broke back before going on to earn his fifth crown in south-west London.

And Castle believes that manner of defeat will hurt Federer for a long time.

“In the deciding set Djokovic was up a break of serve, Federer broke back and at 8-7 on his own serve had two match points,” Castle wrote for Metro.

“Both of these points stole some of my sleep that night, so goodness knows how long Roger lay awake thinking about them.

“His post-match interview with Sue Barker showed him shocked and deflated.

“He managed to get through it and Sue did her normal professional job but Federer looked emotionally shattered, his charm for once hidden by the grey visage of defeat.

“Tennis players always forget matches where they saved match points and won, but they never forget matches where they had match points and lost.

“This will torment him.”

Federer admitted after defeat that it will be hard to get the loss out of his mind.

"I will try to forget this final, but it was a great match!" he said.

"It was long and had everything. I had my chances, but so did he.

"I have to be happy with my performance. But Novak congratulations, that was crazy.

"I hope I give some other people a chance to believe around the world. I gave it all I had and I can still stand.

"I hope the same can be said for all the other 37-year-olds.”
